Dust

If there was a theme this year, it was the dust. Playa powder is very fine, like ash or even rouge. These seven photos show something about what it was like.

The Burning Man is barely visible in the thumbnail if you know where to look, and it seems to float above the dust in the full size image.

Here you cannot see the Man at all in the thumbnail, but the base is visible in the full size photograph.

In this view, the Man is visible on the second tier of the base, but the ground tier has disappeared. If you were at the event in 2001, you know that there are two large structures (the maze and the Temple of Tears) behind the Man, but obscured here by the dust.

In the large view, you can just make out the roof of the Temple of Tears to the right of the people walking in the background.

This is a 21,000 pound granite boulder.

The Temple of Tears was probably the most intensely personal object on the playa this year.

Instead of lines for the porta-potties, this year there was a line for ice during almost all the time it was available. Here, the waiters are geared up for the dust storm blowing through.
